I would like to share with you my experience of visiting the ultra-orthodox quarters of Jerusalem as a female student from the Czech Republic. Me'a She'arim is one of the famous Jewish orthodox neighborhoods in Jerusalem. All of the neighborhood's residents look kind of the same... They all have those black and white (sometimes golden) long suits and coats. They wear those long coats even when it is 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
When visiting the orthodox area in Jerusalem, you have to be dressed properly! otherwise, they will trough garbage at you. Someone hit me with a tomato that other day, even though I had a long skirt. One documentary photographer told me once that, for the orthodox community, it's normal to have 12 kids and live in a two-bedroom apartment. I managed to ask around and collect a bit of information regarding the orthodox dress codes. It is not super accurate, but I hope it will help you understand better...
About the writer, Anina Mengerová:
I am a student of Illustration and graphics from Prague UMPRUM. In 2018 I had an opportunity to study and live in Jerusalem. It involved a lot of new experiences and perceptions based on this remarkable city so I decided to make a little book about it, about Jerusalem and my life in it.
